The major sins in the Quran

The major sins in the Quran include: shirk (associating partners with Allah), qatl (murder), sihr (magic), salah (not performing obligatory prayers), zakat (withholding obligatory charity), zina (fornication and adultery), shahada zuhur (false testimony), sariqa (stealing), riba (consuming wealth acquired through usury), and yateem (consuming the property of an orphan). The Quran emphasizes the importance of seeking forgiveness for one's sins and that repentance is always possible.

Here are some relevant verses from the Quran that mention these major sins:

Shirk (associating partners with Allah)

"And it has already been revealed to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah [recited], they are denied [by them] and ridiculed; so do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Indeed, you would then be like them. Indeed Allah will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hell all together." (Quran 4:140)

"Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly gone far astray." (Quran 4:116) - This verse emphasizes that associating partners with Allah is a major sin that is not forgiven by Allah, and that those who commit this sin have gone astray.

Qatl (murder)

"Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors." (Quran 5:32)

Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors." (Quran 5:32) - This verse highlights the gravity of murder, and that it is equivalent to slaying all of humanity. It also emphasizes the importance of saving lives, and that the prophets came with clear evidence to guide people to the right path.

Sihr (magic)

"And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, "We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]." And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew." (Quran 2:102)

And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew." (Quran 2:102) - This verse talks about the sin of practicing magic, and how the devils taught people magic during the reign of Prophet Solomon. It also highlights the harm that magic can cause, including separation between spouses, and that those who practice it will not have a share in the Hereafter.

Salah (not performing obligatory prayers)

"Then, there has succeeded them a generation who have given up the prayers (i.e. made their prayers to be lost, either by not offering them or by not offering them perfectly or by not offering them in their proper fixed times, etc.) and have followed lusts. So they will be thrown in Hell." (Quran 19:59)

Salah (not performing obligatory prayers) - "But there came after them successors who neglected prayer and pursued desires; so they are going to meet evil." (Quran 19:59) - This verse emphasizes the importance of performing obligatory prayers, and warns against neglecting them and following one's desires, which will lead to evil consequences.

Zakat (withholding obligatory charity)

"And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. And Allah , with what you do, is [fully] Acquainted." (Quran 3:180)

Zakat (withholding obligatory charity) - "And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, with what you do, is [fully] Acquainted." (Quran 3:180) - This verse warns against withholding the obligatory charity that Allah has bestowed upon a person, and that doing so will have negative consequences on the Day of Resurrection.

Zina (fornication and adultery)

"And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way." (Quran 17:32)

Zina (fornication and adultery) - "And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way." (Quran 17:32) - This verse prohibits engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse (including fornication and adultery), and emphasizes that it is an immoral and evil act.

"And do not conceal testimony, for whoever conceals it - his heart is indeed sinful, and Allah is Knowing of what you do." (Quran 2:283) - This verse warns against concealing testimony, and emphasizes the sinfulness of doing so.

Shahada zuhur (false testimony)

"And do not conceal testimony, for whoever conceals it - his heart is indeed sinful, and Allah is Knowing of what you do." (Quran 2:283)

"And do not conceal testimony, for whoever conceals it - his heart is indeed sinful, and Allah is Knowing of what you do." (Quran 2:283) - This verse warns against concealing testimony, and emphasizes the sinfulness of doing so.

Sariqa (stealing)

"As for the thief, the male and the female, amputate their hands in recompense for what they earned [i.e. committed] as a deterrent [punishment] from Allah. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise." (Quran 5:38)

"And as for the thief, the male and the female, amputate their hands in recompense for what they committed as a deterrent [punishment] from Allah. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise." (Quran 5:38) - This verse prescribes a severe punishment for stealing (amputation of hands), and emphasizes that it serves as a deterrent from Allah.

Riba (consuming wealth acquired through usury)

"Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, "Trade is [just] like interest." But Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with Allah. But whoever returns to [dealing in interest or usury] - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein." (Quran 2:275)

"O you who have believed, fear Allah and give up what remains [due to you] of interest, if you should be believers. And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may have your principal - [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged." (Quran 2:278-279) - These verses warn against consuming wealth acquired through usury, and emphasize that it is a serious sin that will lead to a war from Allah and His Messenger. However, if one repents, they may have their principal back without committing any wrong.

Yateem (consuming the property of an orphan)

"Indeed, those who devour the property of orphans unjustly are only consuming into their bellies fire. And they will be burned in a Blaze [i.e. Hellfire]." (Quran 4:10)

(Quran 4:10) - This verse warns against consuming the property of orphans unjustly, and emphasizes that it will lead to punishment in the Hellfire.

It's important to note that these verses are just a few examples of the many verses in the Quran that talk about these major sins, and that there are other verses that mention other sins as well. Also, it's important to remember that the Quran emphasizes the importance of seeking forgiveness for one's sins, and that repentance is always possible.
