Sunnah (hadith) according to the Quran

Sunnah is an Arabic word that means "way" or "path". In the context of Islam, Sunnah refers to the example and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, which he demonstrated through his words, actions, and personal habits. Muslims regard the Sunnah as a fundamental source of guidance in matters of religious practice and daily life, second only to the Quran.

The Sunnah encompasses a wide range of teachings, including guidance on matters of worship, ethics, morality, interpersonal relationships, social behavior, and more. Muslims are encouraged to emulate the Prophet's example in all aspects of their lives, both public and private.

The Sunnah is primarily recorded in collections of Hadith, which are narrations of the Prophet's sayings and actions as reported by his companions and followers. The Hadith literature is vast, and scholars have developed various methods for evaluating the authenticity and reliability of individual narrations.

Muslims strive to follow the Sunnah in their daily lives, seeking to emulate the Prophet's example in all things. This includes following the Prophet's teachings on matters such as prayer, fasting, charity, honesty, kindness, and humility, among many others. By doing so, Muslims believe that they are following the path set out by the Prophet and fulfilling the will of God.

As Sunnah refers to the teachings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), there are no direct Quranic verses that mention the term "Sunnah." However, there are verses in the Quran that encourage following the Prophet's example and adhering to his guidance:

"So take what the Messenger gives you, and refrain from what he prohibits you." (Quran 59:7)

These verses emphasize the importance of following the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and adhering to his guidance, which is referred to as the Sunnah in Islamic terminology.

"So let those who go against his [the Prophet's] command beware lest a trial strike them or a painful punishment." (Quran 24:63)

"And obey Allah and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy." (Quran 3:132)

"And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger - those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions!" (Quran 4:69)

"Say, [O Muhammad], "I only advise you of one [thing] - that you stand for Allah, [seeking truth] in pairs and individually, and then give thought." There is not in your companion any madness. He is only a warner to you before a severe punishment." (Quran 34:46)

These verses highlight the importance of following the example of the Prophet Muhammad, as he is the perfect example of how to live one's life according to Islamic teachings.

"Say (O Muhammad): 'If you (really) love Allah, then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Quran and the Sunnah), Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.'" (Quran 3:31)

"But no, by your Lord, they can have no (real) faith, until they make you (O Muhammad) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission." (Quran 4:65)

"And We have not sent you (O Muhammad) except as a mercy to the worlds." (Quran 21:107)

"And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute (with one another) lest you lose courage and your strength depart, and be patient. Surely, Allah is with those who are patient." (Quran 8:46)

"Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah, you have a good example to follow for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often." [Quran 33:21]

These verses and others like them indicate the importance of following the example and teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a means of gaining Allah's pleasure and mercy.

"Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." (3:31)

"And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger - those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions!" (4:69)

"Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example to follow for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often." (33:21)

"And let those who oppose the Messenger's commandment beware, lest fitnah strike them or a painful punishment." (24:63)

"And obey Allah and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy." (3:132)

"But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muhammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission." (4:65)

These verses emphasize the importance of following the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in order to gain the love and forgiveness of Allah, to attain a high status in the hereafter, and to obtain mercy. They also warn against opposing the commandments of the Prophet and urge believers to submit in full, willing submission to his teachings.

In summary, the Sunnah refers to the way of life, teachings, and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, which serve as a guidance for Muslims to follow in their daily lives. The Quran itself commands Muslims to obey and follow the Prophet's Sunnah, and there are numerous verses that encourage Muslims to follow the example set by the Prophet, such as emulating his character and practicing his teachings. Additionally, the Prophet's companions and early Muslim scholars also emphasized the importance of following the Sunnah as a means of maintaining the purity and authenticity of Islamic practice. Overall, the Sunnah plays a central role in Islamic belief and practice, and serves as a source of guidance and inspiration for Muslims around the world.
