Insects according to the Quran

In Islamic tradition, insects are considered a part of the broader category of animals that includes all living creatures apart from humans and jinn (a type of spiritual being).

The Quran often refers to insects in a broader context of the natural world, such as when discussing the signs of Allah's creation or the importance of environmental balance. For example, in Surah Al-An'am, verse 59, Allah says, "And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record."

There are also specific references to certain insects, such as bees and ants, in the Quran. For example, Surah An-Nahl, verse 68-69, states that Allah inspired bees to create their hives in mountains and trees and instructed them to eat from all types of fruits. Similarly, Surah An-Naml, verse 18, mentions how a gathering of ants were able to communicate and warn each other of the approach of Prophet Solomon's army.

Overall, the Quran acknowledges the significance and importance of insects as part of the natural world and emphasizes the importance of maintaining ecological balance and the interdependence of all living things.

The Quran mentions insects in several verses, both as examples of God's creation and as symbols of various spiritual and ethical concepts. Here are some examples of Quranic verses that mention insects:

"And there is no creature on [or within] the earth or bird that flies with its wings except [that they are] communities like you. We have not neglected in the Register a thing. Then unto their Lord they will be gathered." (Quran 6:38)

"And your Lord inspired to the bee, 'Take for yourself among the mountains, houses, and among the trees and [in] that which they construct. Then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you].' There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed, in that is a sign for a people who give thought." (Quran 16:68-69)

"Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are those who have disbelieved, and they will not [ever] believe." (Quran 8:55)

"And We sent upon them the flood and locusts and lice and frogs and blood as distinct signs, but they were arrogant and were a criminal people." (Quran 7:133)

"But there came after them successors who neglected prayer and pursued desires; so they are going to meet evil - except those who repent, believe and do righteousness. And those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged at all." (Quran 19:59)

These verses mention various insects, including bees, locusts, lice, and possibly frogs (some translations interpret the word "diddan" in Quran 7:133 as frogs). The Quran also uses insects as examples of the diversity of God's creation and the need for humility and repentance before God.

"And there is no creature on [or within] the earth or bird that flies with its wings except [that they are] communities like you. We have not neglected in the Register a thing. Then unto their Lord they will be gathered." [Surah Al-An'am 6:38]

"So We sent upon them the flood and locusts and lice and frogs and blood as distinct signs, but they were arrogant and were a criminal people." [Surah Al-A'raf 7:133]

"And We had certainly established them in such as We have not established you, and We made for them hearing and vision and hearts. But their hearing and vision and hearts availed them not from anything [of the punishment] when they were [continually] rejecting the signs of Allah; and they were enveloped by what they used to ridicule." [Surah Al-Ahqaf 46:26]

"Indeed, Allah is not timid to present an example - that of a mosquito or what is smaller than it. And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, "What did Allah intend by this as an example?" He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient." [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:26]

"And Allah created every [living] creature from water. And of them are those that move on their bellies, and of them are those that walk on two legs, and of them are those that walk on four. Allah creates what He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent." [Surah An-Nur 24:45]

"And We have certainly adorned the nearest heaven with stars and have made [from] them what is thrown at the devils and have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze." [Surah Al-Mulk 67:5]

"And [mention, O Muhammad], when We directed to you a few of the jinn, listening to the Qur'an. And when they attended it, they said, "Listen quietly." And when it was concluded, they went back to their people as warners." [Surah Al-Ahqaf 46:29]

Note: While the above verses do mention some insects (e.g. locusts, lice, mosquitoes), they are not specific to the category of insects and instead refer to a broader range of living creatures.
