Hikmah according to the Quran

"Hikmah" is an Arabic word that is commonly used in Islamic texts and teachings. It can be translated as "wisdom" or "understanding" and refers to the ability to understand the nature of things and to make sound and appropriate judgments and decisions.

In Islamic teachings, "hikmah" is considered a highly desirable attribute and is often associated with the prophets and other righteous individuals who possessed great wisdom and insight. The Quran describes Prophet Luqman as a wise man who was given hikmah by Allah, and many hadiths (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad) emphasize the importance of seeking and acquiring hikmah.

In practical terms, hikmah can be seen as the ability to make good choices and to act wisely and appropriately in various situations, based on a deep understanding of the relevant factors and circumstances. It involves using reason, reflection, and insight to arrive at the best possible course of action, while also being mindful of one's values and principles.

Overall, hikmah is seen as a crucial aspect of Islamic spirituality and ethics, and is something that Muslims are encouraged to seek and cultivate in their own lives.

"He grants wisdom to whom He pleases; and he to whom wisdom is granted indeed receives a benefit overflowing; but none will grasp the Message but men of understanding." (Quran 2:269)

"And [mention] when Luqman said to his son, advising him, 'O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice.' And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do. 'O my son, indeed it is better that there be no deity except Allah. Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice.' And We have enjoined upon man goodness to parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do. 'O my son, indeed, hikmah is that which is granted by Allah. Whoever has been granted it - indeed, he has been granted much good. And none would be reminded except those of understanding.'" (Quran 31:13-16)

"Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do. And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, 'We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him.' And thus We have sent down to you the Book. And those to whom We [previously] gave the Scripture believe in it. And among these [people of Makkah] are those who believe in it. And none reject Our verses except the disbelievers. And you did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you inscribe one with your right hand. Otherwise the falsifiers would have had [cause for] doubt. Rather, the Qur'an is distinct verses [preserved] within the breasts of those who have been given knowledge. And none reject Our verses except the wrongdoers. And they say, 'Why are not signs sent down to him from his Lord?' Say, 'The signs are only with Allah, and I am only a clear warner.' But is it not sufficient for them that We have sent down to you the Book which is recited to them? Indeed in that is a mercy and reminder for a people who believe. Say, 'Sufficient is Allah between me and you as Witness. He knows what is in the heavens and earth. And they who have believed in falsehood and disbelieved in Allah - it is those who are the losers.'" (Quran 29:45-52)

"He grants hikmah to whom He pleases, and whoever is granted hikmah is indeed given a great wealth, yet none will grasp it except those endowed with understanding." (Quran 2:269)

"And We have certainly given Luqman hikmah, saying: 'Be grateful to Allah.' And whoever is grateful is grateful for the benefit of himself. And whoever denies [His favors] – then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy." (Quran 31:12)

"Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided." (Quran 16:125)

"Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do." (Quran 29:45)

"And when you recite the Quran, We place between you and those who do not believe in the hereafter a concealed partition. And We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And when you mention your Lord alone in the Quran, they turn back in aversion." (Quran 17:45-46)

"And do not dispute with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, 'We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him.'" (Quran 29:46)

"Allah instructs you concerning your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females. But if there are [only] daughters, two or more, for them is two thirds of one's estate. And if there is only one, for her is half. And for one's parents, to each one of them is a sixth of his estate if he left children. But if he had no children and the parents [alone] inherit from him, then for his mother is one third. And if he had brothers [or sisters], for his mother is a sixth, after any bequest he [may have] made or debt. Your parents or your children - you know not which of them are nearest to you in benefit. [These shares are] an obligation [imposed] by Allah. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise." (Quran 4:11)

"And whoever is conscious of Allah - He will make for him a way out [of difficulty]. And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent." (Quran 65:2-3)

"They are not [all] the same; among the People of the Scripture is a community standing [in obedience], reciting the verses of Allah during periods of the night and prostrating [in prayer]. They believe in Allah and the Last Day, and they enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and hasten to good deeds. And those are among the righteous." (Quran 3:113-114)

"And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good." (Quran 29:69)

Hikmah in the Quran refers to wisdom, which includes understanding and applying knowledge in a beneficial way. The Quran emphasizes the importance of seeking hikmah and using it to make decisions and act with wisdom. Quranic verses encourage believers to use hikmah in their interactions with others, in their approach to matters of inheritance and family, and in their reliance on Allah during times of difficulty. The Quran also recognizes and praises those who possess hikmah and use it to do good.
