Gratitude and thankfulness - in the Quran

Gratitude and thankfulness are important themes in the Quran, and are mentioned numerous times throughout the holy book. In Arabic, gratitude is expressed as "shukr" or "hamd", and refers to showing appreciation and thankfulness to Allah for His blessings and favors. Here are some Quranic verses that mention gratitude and thankfulness:

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:152 - "Therefore remember Me, I will remember you. And be grateful to Me, and do not deny Me."

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185 - "So that you may complete the count of days, and magnify Allah for His guiding you, and that you may be thankful."

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:172 - "O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship."

Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:32 - "Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors."

Surah Al-An'am 6:162 - "Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds."

Surah An-Naml 27:62 - "Or, Who listens to the [soul] distressed when it calls upon Him and Who relieves its suffering and makes you [people] inheritors of the earth? Is there a deity with Allah? Little do you remember."

Surah Luqman 31:12 - "And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom [and said], "Be grateful to Allah." And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] - then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy."

Surah Al-Mulk 67:2 - "The One who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving."

Surah Al-Nisa 4:36 - "Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful."

Surah Al-A'raf 7:144 - "He said, 'O Moses, I have chosen you over the people with My messages and My words [to you]. So take what I have given you and be among the grateful.'"

Surah Ibrahim 14:7 - "And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: "If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allah), I will give you more (of My blessings); but if you are thankless (i.e. disbelievers), verily, My punishment is indeed severe."

Surah Al-Nahl 16:114 - "Then eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And be grateful for the favor of Allah, if it is [indeed] Him that you worship."

Surah Al-Isra 17:23-24 - "And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small."

Surah Fatir 35:34 - "And they will say, "All praise is [due] to Allah , who has removed from us [all] sorrow. Indeed, our Lord is Forgiving and Appreciative."

Surah Al-Qalam 68:4 - "And indeed, you are of a great moral character."

Surah Al-A'la 87:14-15 - "Indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."

Surah Al-Inshirah 94:5-6 - "Verily, with every hardship comes ease. Verily, with every hardship comes ease."

Surah Al-Ahzab 33:35 - "Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward."

Surah Fatir 35:34 - "And they will say, "All praise is [due] to Allah , who has removed from us [all] sorrow. Indeed, our Lord is Forgiving and Appreciative."

Surah Fatir 35:15 - "O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy."

Surah Al-Ahqaf 46:15 - "And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, 'My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.'"

Surah Al-Rahman 55:13 - "Then which of the favors of your Lord do you deny?"

Surah Al-A'la 87:14-15 - "Indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."

Surah Al-An'am 6:103 - "Vision perceives Him not, but He perceives [all] vision; and He is the Subtle, the Acquainted."

Surah Al-Nahl 16:18 - "And if you would count the favors of Allah, never could you be able to count them. Truly! Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

Surah Al-Nahl 16:114 - "Then eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And be grateful for the favor of Allah, if it is [indeed] Him that you worship."

Surah Al-Nahl 16:78 - "And Allah has extracted you from the wombs of your mothers not knowing a thing, and He made for you hearing and vision and intellect that perhaps you would be grateful."

Surah Al-Nahl 16:15 - "And He has subjected for you the night and day and the sun and moon, and the stars are subjected by His command. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reason."

Surah Al-Kahf 18:46 - "Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope."

Surah Al-Zumar 39:66 - "So is He who is a believer like unto him who is an evil-liver? They are not alike. But as for those who believe and do good works, for them are the gardens of retreat - a welcome (in reward) for what they used to do."

Surah Al-Ahqaf 46:15 - "And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, 'My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Surah Al-Fath 48:26 - "When those who disbelieved had put into their hearts chauvinism - the chauvinism of the time of ignorance. But Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers and imposed upon them the word of righteousness, and they were more deserving of it and worthy of it. And ever is Allah, of all things, Knowing."

Surah Al-Insan 76:3 - "Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful."

Surah Al-Inshirah 94:5-6 - "Verily, with every hardship comes ease. Verily, with every hardship comes ease."

Surah Al-A'raf 7:43 - "And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, (so they will be) brothers, on thrones facing each other. No fatigue shall touch them, nor shall they (ever) be expelled from there."

Surah Al-A'raf 7:144 - "He said, 'O Moses, I have chosen you over the people with My messages and My words [to you]. So take what I have given you and be among the grateful.'"

And when [Solomon] saw it placed before him, he said, "This is from the favor of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful. And whoever is grateful - his gratitude is only for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever is ungrateful - then indeed, my Lord is Free of need and Generous."

Surah Al-Naml 27:19 - "And he (Prophet Solomon) smiled, laughing at her speech, and said, 'My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to do righteousness of which You approve. And admit me by Your mercy into [the ranks of] Your righteous servants.'"

Surah Al-Naml 27:40 - "Said one who had knowledge from the Scripture, "I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you." And when [Solomon] saw it placed before him, he said, "This is from the favor of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful. And whoever is grateful - his gratitude is only for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever is ungrateful - then indeed, my Lord is Free of need and Generous."

Surah Al-Hadid 57:20 - "Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion."

Surah Al-Hujurat 49:11 - "O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers."

He has known that you [Muslims] will not be able to do it and has turned to you in forgiveness, so recite what is easy [for you] of the Qur'an. He has known that there will be among you those who are ill and others traveling throughout the land seeking [something] of the bounty of Allah and others fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite what is easy from it and establish prayer and give zakah and loan Allah a goodly loan. And whatever good you put forward for yourselves - you will find it with Allah. It is better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

In summary, the Quran emphasizes the importance of various qualities and actions that are pleasing to Allah, such as belief, obedience, truthfulness, patience, humility, charity, fasting, guarding one's private parts, and remembrance of Allah. It reminds us that Allah created life and death as a test for us, and that we should strive to be the best we can be in the sight of Allah. Peace, mercy, and the sanctity of human life are also emphasized as important values in Islam.
