Angel Kiraman Katibin in the Quran

Angel Kiraman Katibin (the noble scribes) are mentioned in the Quran. They are two angels who are responsible for recording the deeds of every human being, one angel records the good deeds, while the other records the bad deeds. They are believed to be with every person throughout their life, and they record every action, thought, and intention.

Here are a few verses from the Quran that mention the Angel Kiraman Katibin:

"Verily, We have created man in toil. Does he think that no one has power over him? He says: 'I have spent wealth in abundance.' Does he think that no one sees him? Have We not given him two eyes, and a tongue and two lips, and shown him the two ways (of good and evil)? But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep. And what will make you know the path that is steep? (It is) freeing a neck (slave, etc.) or giving food in a day of hunger (or) to an orphan near of kin or to a poor person lying in the dust (etc.). Then he became one of those who believed, recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), but those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet). (It will be) like a mirage swallowed by a thirsty one. (Quran 90:4-20)

"Knows he not that when the contents of the graves are brought out and poured forth (all mankind is resurrected). And that which is in the breasts (of men) shall be made known. Verily, that Day (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) their Lord will be Well-Acquainted with them (as to their deeds), (and will reward them for their deeds). (Quran 100:9-11)

These verses emphasize the idea that the Angel Kiraman Katibin records all of our deeds and that they will be presented to Allah on the Day of Judgment. Therefore, it is important to be mindful of our actions and strive to do good deeds.

"And indeed, over you (are appointed) angels, to watch over you, Kiraman (honorable) Katibin, they know all that you do." (Quran 82:10-12)

"Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private counsels? Indeed (We do), and Our messengers (Kiraman Katibin) are by them, to record." (Quran 43:80)

"And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein, when the two receivers (angels) receive, seated on the right and on the left. Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer (Kiraman Katibin) prepared [to record]." (Quran 50:16-18)

"And whoever is given his record in his right hand - these will read their book, and they will not be wronged a [single] dot. Whoever is deprived of his record in his right hand - these will say, 'Oh, I wish I had not been given my record and had not known what is my account. I wish my death had been the decisive one. My wealth has not availed me. Gone from me is my authority.' [ Allah will say], 'Seize him and shackle him. Then into Hellfire drive him. Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him.' Indeed, he did not used to believe in Allah, the Most Great, nor did he encourage the feeding of the poor. So there is not for him here this Day any devoted friend. Nor any food except from the discharge of wounds; none will eat it except the sinners. So I swear by what you see and what you do not see that indeed, the Qur'an is the word of a noble Messenger. And it is not the word of a poet; little do you believe. Nor the word of a soothsayer; little do you remember. [It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds. And if Muhammad had made up about Us some [false] sayings, We would have seized him by the right hand; then We would have cut from him the aorta. And there is no one of you who could prevent [Us] from him." (Quran 69:19-44)

"And those who guarded their chastity, except from their wives or (the captives and slaves) that their right hands possess, for then, they are free from blame; but whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors; those who are faithfully true to their Amanat (all the duties which Allah has ordained, honesty, moral responsibility and trusts etc.) and to their covenants; and those who strictly guard their (five compulsory congregational) Salawat (prayers) (at their fixed stated hours). These are indeed the inheritors. Who shall inherit the Firdaus (Paradise). They shall dwell therein forever. And indeed We created man from an extract of clay (water and earth). Then We placed him as a Nutfah (mixed drops of the male and female sexual discharge) in a safe lodging. Then We made the Nutfah into a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood), then We made the clot into a little lump of flesh, then We made out of that little lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, and then We brought it forth as another creation. So Blessed is Allah, the Best of creators. Then after that, surely, you will die. Then (again), surely, you will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection." (Quran 23:5-16)

There are no other verses in the Quran specifically mentioning the angels known as Kiraman Katibin. However, the concept of angels recording a person's good and bad deeds is mentioned in several other verses such as:

"And every man's augury have We fastened to his own neck, and We shall bring forth for him on the Day of Resurrection a book which he will find wide open. (It will be said unto him): Read thy Book. Thy soul sufficeth as reckoner against thee this day." (Quran 17:13-14)

"And the Book is placed, and thou seest the guilty fearful of that which is therein, and they say: What kind of a Book is this that leaveth not a small thing nor a great thing but hath counted it! And they find all that they did confronting them, and thy Lord wrongeth no-one." (Quran 18:49)

"On that day will We set a seal upon their mouths. But their hands will speak unto Us, and their feet bear witness of what they used to earn." (Quran 36:65)

These verses imply the existence of angels who record a person's good and bad deeds throughout their life and present them before Allah on the Day of Judgment. These angels may be referred to as Kiraman Katibin or simply "recording angels."
