The story of the Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) first revelation from God - in the Quran

Surah Al-Alaq recounts the story of the first revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad by the angel Gabriel. According to the Surah, it happened when the Prophet was in the cave of Hira, outside the city of Mecca, in a state of spiritual retreat and contemplation. Suddenly, the angel Gabriel appeared before him and commanded him to recite the words that were later revealed in the Quran. The first few verses of Surah Al-Alaq are believed to be the first revelation:

"Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists). He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen. He has taught man that which he knew not." (Quran 96:1-5)

The Prophet Muhammad was initially frightened by the experience but was reassured by the angel Gabriel, who continued to appear to him with revelations over the course of the next 23 years. This event is considered by Muslims to be a pivotal moment in the history of Islam and marks the beginning of the revelation of the Quran.

"Who has taught (the writing) by the pen."

"He has taught man that which he knew not."

"Nay, indeed, man transgresses."

"Because he sees himself self-sufficient."

"Surely unto your Lord is the return."

"Have you seen him who forbids."

"A servant of Allah when he prays."

"Have you seen if he is upon guidance."

"Or enjoins piety?"

"Have you seen if he denies and turns away."

"Knows he not that Allah does see."

"Let him beware! If he ceases not, We will drag him by the forelock."

"A lying, sinful forelock!"
