Jihad is a term that is commonly associated with a struggle or fight for the sake of Allah. The term itself means "struggle" or "striving," and it can refer to a number of different types of struggles that a Muslim might face in their life.
In the Quran, Jihad is often used to refer to the struggle to live a righteous and obedient life, to spread the message of Islam, and to defend the faith from its enemies. It can also refer to military warfare in self-defense or in defense of the community.
It is important to note that the concept of Jihad in Islam is often misunderstood and misrepresented in the media and in popular discourse. Jihad is not synonymous with terrorism or violent extremism, and it is not a call to aggression or an excuse for unjust violence. Rather, it is a multifaceted concept that encompasses both personal and collective struggles to do good and resist evil, as well as the right to self-defense in the face of aggression.
Muslims are called upon to engage in Jihad in a peaceful and just manner, and to always strive for the betterment of society and the world at large. Jihad is also intimately connected to the concept of Ihsan, or excellence in one's actions, as Muslims are expected to engage in Jihad with the utmost sincerity and commitment to righteousness.
There are several verses in the Quran that mention Jihad, including:
"Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors." (2:190)
"And fight them until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah. And if they cease - then indeed, Allah is Seeing of what they do." (8:39)
"Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory." (22:39)
It is important to understand these verses in their proper historical and contextual contexts, and to interpret them in accordance with the broader teachings of the Quran and Islamic tradition.
"Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors." (2:190)
"And fight them until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah. And if they cease - then indeed, Allah is Seeing of what they do." (8:39)
"O you who have believed, shall I guide you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment? [It is that] you believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is best for you, if you should know." (61:10-11)
"And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged." (8:60)
"So obey not the disbelievers, but strive against them (by preaching) with the utmost endeavour with it (the Quran)." (25:52)
It should be noted that the term "jihad" has a broader meaning in Islam beyond just military struggle. It can also refer to a spiritual struggle against one's own base desires and inclinations, or to the struggle to establish justice and promote good in society.
"And fight them until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah. And if they cease - then indeed, Allah is Seeing of what they do." (Quran 8:39)
"And why should you not fight in the cause of Allah and of those who, being weak, are ill-treated (and oppressed)? Men, women, and children, whose cry is: 'Our Lord! Rescue us from this town, whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from You one who will protect; and raise for us from You one who will help!'" (Quran 4:75)
"Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory. [They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without right - only because they say, 'Our Lord is Allah.'" (Quran 22:39-40)
"O you who have believed, fight those adjacent to you of the disbelievers and let them find in you harshness. And know that Allah is with the righteous." (Quran 9:123)
"Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah, so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Quran. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah? So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And it is that which is the great attainment." (Quran 9:111)
"And do not weaken in pursuit of the enemy. If you should be suffering - so are they suffering as you are suffering, but you expect from Allah that which they expect not. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise." (Quran 4:104)
"And fight them until there is no more fitnah and [until] worship is [acknowledged to be] for Allah. But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors." (Quran 2:193)
"Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors." (Quran 2:190)
"Fight them; Allah will punish them by your hands and will disgrace them and give you victory over them and satisfy the breasts of a believing people." (Quran 9:14)
"And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and [for] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, 'Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper?'" (Quran 4:75)
These verses, among others, highlight the concept of Jihad in Islam, which refers to the struggle or effort made in the way of Allah, both inwardly and outwardly. While it can include military action in defense of the faith or to protect the weak and oppressed, it can also refer to striving to better oneself, promoting justice and goodness, and making charitable contributions to help others.

"And fight them until there is no fitnah and the religion, all of it, is for Allah. And if they cease - then indeed, Allah is seeing of what they do." (8:39)
"O you who have believed, fight those adjacent to you of the disbelievers and let them find in you harshness. And know that Allah is with the righteous." (9:123)
"Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture - [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled." (9:29)
"Permission to fight has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory." (22:39)
"So do not weaken and call for peace while you are superior; and Allah is with you and will never deprive you of [the reward of] your deeds." (47:35)
"And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing." (8:61)
"And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient." (8:46)
"And strive for Allah with the striving due to Him. He has chosen you and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty. [It is] the religion of your father, Abraham. Allah named you "Muslims" before [in former scriptures] and in this [revelation] that the Messenger may be a witness over you and you may be witnesses over the people. So establish prayer and give zakah and hold fast to Allah. He is your protector; and excellent is the protector, and excellent is the helper." (22:78)
Jihad is a term mentioned in the Quran that is often translated as "struggle" or "striving" in the path of Allah. It is an important concept in Islam, with various interpretations and applications. While Jihad may include physical combat, it also encompasses spiritual and intellectual struggles to uphold righteousness and defend the Islamic faith. The Quran emphasizes the defensive nature of Jihad and stresses that it must be undertaken with justice and mercy towards all.
