Birds according to the Quran

In the Quran, birds are mentioned as one of Allah's creations or signs, indicating His power and wisdom. The Quranic verses describe the beauty, freedom, and control of birds in the sky and their ability to fly with wings. Birds are also mentioned in stories of the Prophets, such as the story of the hoopoe bird sent by Prophet Solomon to locate the queen of Sheba, and the story of Prophet Abraham and the birds. Additionally, birds are included among the permissible foods for Muslims to eat.

There are several verses in the Quran that mention birds and their significance in the natural world. Here are a few relevant verses:

"Do they not see the birds above them, spreading out their wings and folding them in? None can uphold them except the Most Merciful. Indeed, He is the Seeing of all things." (Quran 67:19)

"And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy until, when they have carried heavy rainclouds, We drive them to a dead land and We send down rain therein and bring forth thereby [some] of all the fruits. Thus will We bring forth the dead; perhaps you may be reminded." (Quran 7:57)

"Do they not see the birds controlled in the atmosphere of the sky? None holds them up except Allah. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe." (Quran 16:79)

These verses highlight the beauty and complexity of Allah's creation and the role of birds in the natural world. They also emphasize Allah's power and control over all things, including the flight of birds and the movement of the winds. By reflecting on these verses, we can gain a greater appreciation for the natural world and recognize Allah's power and wisdom in all things.

"Do you not see that Allah is exalted by whomever is within the heavens and the earth and [by] the birds with wings spread [in flight]? Each [of them] has known his [means of] prayer and exalting [Him], and Allah is Knowing of what they do." (Quran 24:41)

"And We have certainly made in the heavens great stars and have adorned it for the observers. And We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allah] except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame. And the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing. And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers." (Quran 15:16-20)

"And when he [Prophet Ibrahim] saw the moon rising, he said, 'This is my lord.' But when it set, he said, 'Unless my Lord guides me, I will surely be among the people gone astray.' And when he saw the sun rising, he said, 'This is my lord; this is greater.' But when it set, he said, 'O my people, indeed I am free from what you associate with Allah. Indeed, I have turned my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allah.' ... And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed in that are signs for those of knowledge." (Quran 6:76-79, 30:22)

These verses further emphasize the beauty and complexity of Allah's creation and the diversity of the natural world, including birds and celestial bodies like the moon and stars. They also highlight the importance of seeking guidance from Allah and recognizing His power and wisdom in all things.

"And indeed, We have appointed in every city adversaries to plot therein. But they only plot against themselves, and they perceive [it] not. And when a sign comes to them, they say, 'Never will we believe until we are given like that which was given to the messengers of Allah.' Allah is most knowing of where He places His message. There will afflict those who committed crimes debasement before Allah and severe punishment for what they used to conspire." (Quran 6:123-124)

"And when the birds are made to fall in the midst of the valley, then will the truth be known by Allah and the avenging of His wrath. Indeed Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." (Quran 2:56)

"And We have made the earth a lodging place for some of them, and a means of livelihood for them. And therein are many benefits for them and for those [people] for whom they are not grateful." (Quran 7:10)

These verses also highlight the importance of recognizing Allah's power and wisdom in all things, including the natural world and the consequences of our actions. They also emphasize the role of birds as a part of Allah's creation and the benefits they provide to humans and other living beings. By reflecting on these verses, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the importance of protecting and preserving it for future generations.

"And when the birds came flocking to and gathered together, he [Prophet Ibrahim] set them apart and assigned to each of them a separate place. And He Allah knows well their ways." (Quran 2:260)

"Have they not looked at the birds above them, spreading and folding their wings? None can uphold them except the Most Merciful. Indeed, He is of all things Seeing." (Quran 67:19)

"Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and [sometimes] folded in? None holds them [aloft] except the Most Merciful. Indeed, He is, of all things, Seeing." (Quran 27:26)

These verses highlight the beauty and wonder of Allah's creation, including the intricate ways in which birds fly and interact with their environment. They also emphasize Allah's mercy and watchfulness over all things, including birds, and invite us to reflect on His power and wisdom.

"Or [consider such an example] as the one who passed by a township which had fallen into ruin. He said, 'How will Allah bring this to life after its death?' So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years; then He revived him. He said, 'How long have you remained?' The man said, 'I have remained a day or part of a day.' He said, 'Rather, you have remained one hundred years. Look at your food and your drink; it has not changed with time. And look at your donkey; and We will make you a sign for the people. And look at the bones [of this donkey] - how We raise them and then We cover them with flesh.' And when it became clear to him, he said, 'I know that Allah is over all things competent.' And [mention] when Abraham said, 'My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead.' [Allah] said, 'Have you not believed?' He said, 'Yes, but [I ask] only that my heart may be satisfied.' [Allah] said, 'Take four birds and commit them to yourself. Then [after slaughtering them] put on each hill a portion of them; then call them - they will come [flying] to you in haste. And know that Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.'" (Quran 2:259-260)

"Then We sent to her Our Angel, and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man. She said, 'Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah.' He said, 'I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy.' She said, 'How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?' He said, 'Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, "It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed." So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place. And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, 'Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten.' But he called her from below her, 'Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream. And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates. So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, "Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man."'" (Quran 19:17-26)

These verses contain stories and parables that involve birds and demonstrate Allah's power and control over the natural world. They also highlight the importance of faith and trust in Allah's plans and the need to rely on Him in difficult times.

"And We have certainly made in the heavens great stars and have adorned them for the observers. And We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allah] Except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame. And the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing. And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers. And there is not a thing but that with Us are its depositories, and We do not send it down except according to a known measure. And We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky and given you drink from it. And you are not its retainers. And indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor." (Quran 15:16-23)

"And the birds assembled; all with him were turning to Allah [in repentance]." (Quran 38:18)

"Or were they created by nothing, or were they the creators [of themselves]? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are not certain. Or have they the depositories [containing the provision] of your Lord? Or are they the controllers [of them]? Or have they a stairway [into the heaven] upon which they listen? Then let their listener produce a clear authority. Or has He [Allah] daughters while you have sons? Or do you, O Muhammad, ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down? Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down? Or do they intend a plan [against the Prophet]? But those who disbelieve - they are in planning." (Quran 52:35-43)

These verses touch upon various themes and subjects, including the magnificence of Allah's creation, the importance of repentance, the limits of human knowledge, and the falsehood of idolatry. Birds are mentioned either as part of Allah's creation or as a metaphor for those who turn to Him in repentance.

"Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and [sometimes] folded in? None holds them [aloft] except the Most Merciful. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise." (Quran 67:19)

"And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy, and We send down from the sky pure water. That We may bring to life thereby a dead land and give it as drink to those We created of numerous livestock and men. And We have certainly distributed it among them that they might be reminded, but most of the people refuse except disbelief." (Quran 25:48-50)

"And We have sent down rain from the sky in a measured amount and settled it in the earth. And indeed, We are Able to take it away. And We brought forth for you thereby gardens of palm trees and grapevines in which for you are abundant fruits and from which you eat. And [We brought forth] a tree issuing from Mount Sinai which produces oil and food for those who eat. And indeed, for you in livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from what is in their bellies, and for you in them are numerous benefits, and from them you eat." (Quran 23:18-21)

These verses discuss various aspects of Allah's creation and His provisions for His creatures, including birds. They also highlight the mercy and power of Allah, as well as the importance of gratitude and remembrance. The mention of birds in these verses is often in the context of Allah's provision for His creatures, as well as a reminder of His power and wisdom.

"Have they not seen the birds above them spreading their wings and closing them? None holds them [aloft] except the Most Merciful. Indeed He is, of all things, Seeing." (Quran 67:19)

"Do they not see the birds controlled in the atmosphere of the sky? None holds them up except Allah. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe." (Quran 16:79)

"And We have certainly made in the sky constellations and have beautified it for the observers. And We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allah] except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame. And the earth We have spread out, and excellent is the preparer. And of all things We created two mates; perhaps you will remember. So flee to Allah. Indeed, I am to you from Him a clear warner. And do not make [as equal] with Allah another deity. Indeed, I am to you from Him a clear warner. Similarly, there came not to those before them any messenger except that they said, "A magician or a madman." Did they suggest it to them? Rather, they are a transgressing people. So leave them, [O Muhammad], for you are not to be blamed. And remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers. And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me. Indeed, it is Allah who is the [continual] Provider, the firm possessor of strength." (Quran 15:16-23)

These verses touch on various themes, including the beauty and intricacy of Allah's creation, the protection of the skies from devils, the importance of monotheism, the role of messengers and their reception by people, and the purpose of creation to worship Allah. The mention of birds in these verses is often in the context of Allah's control and protection over His creation, as well as a reminder of His power and wisdom.

"And [mention, O Muhammad], when We gave to you a part of the Scripture and wisdom and then an messenger came to you confirming what was with you, you [i.e., the Jews] believed in him and you [i.e., the Muslims] were [before] his helpers." Allah said, "Have you acknowledged and taken upon that My commitment?" They said, "We have acknowledged it." He said, "Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses." Whoever turns away after that - they are the defiantly disobedient. So is it other than the religion of Allah they desire, while to Him have submitted [all] those within the heavens and earth, willingly or by compulsion, and to Him they will be returned? Say, "We have believed in Allah and in what was revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Descendants, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus and to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [submitting] to Him." And whoever desires other than Islam as religion - never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers. How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and had witnessed that the Messenger is true and clear signs had come to them? And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people. Those - their recompense will be that upon them is the curse of Allah and the angels and the people, all together. Abiding eternally therein; the punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved. Except for those who repent after that and correct themselves. For indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Indeed, those who reject the message after their belief and then increase in disbelief - never will their [claimed] repentance be accepted, and they are the ones astray. Indeed, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers - upon them will be the curse of Allah and of the angels and the people, all together, Abiding eternally therein. The punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved, Except for those who repent after that and correct themselves. For indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, "Be," and he was. The truth is from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters. Then whoever argues with you about it after [this] knowledge has come to you - say, "Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then supplicate earnestly [together] and invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars [among us]." Indeed, this is the true narration. And there is no deity except Allah. And indeed, Allah is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. But if they turn away, then indeed - Allah is Knowing of the corrupters." (Quran 3:81-90)
