Barzakh is a term that refers to the state of the soul after death, which is believed to be a transitional period between this life and the hereafter. The Quran mentions Barzakh in several verses, such as:
"Until, when death comes to one of them, he says, 'My Lord, send me back that I might do righteousness in that which I left behind.' No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier (Barzakh) until the Day they are resurrected." [Quran 23:99-100]
"And do not say about those who are killed in the way of Allah, 'They are dead.' Rather, they are alive, but you perceive [it] not. And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.' Those are the ones upon whom are blessings and mercy from their Lord, and it is those who are the guided ones." [Quran 2:154-157]
"And if you could but see when the wrongdoers are in the overwhelming pangs of death while the angels extend their hands, [saying], 'Discharge your souls! Today you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation for what you used to say against Allah other than the truth and [that] you were, toward His verses, being arrogant.'" [Quran 6:93]
These verses and others in the Quran describe the concept of Barzakh as a state of waiting and accountability for the soul after death, where it remains until the Day of Resurrection. Muslims believe that the righteous souls will be granted ease and comfort in Barzakh, while the sinful souls will be punished and tormented until the Day of Judgment.
Here are some Quranic verses that mention the concept of Barzakh:
"Until, when death comes to one of them, he says, 'My Lord, send me back that I might do righteousness in that which I left behind.' No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier (Barzakh) until the Day they are resurrected." [Quran 23:99-100]
"And among His signs is that He shows you the lightning, causing fear and aspiration, and He sends down rain from the sky by which He brings to life the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed in that are signs for a people who use reason. And among His signs is that the heaven and earth stand by His command. Then when He calls you with a [single] call from the earth, immediately you will come forth. And to Him belongs whoever is in the heavens and earth. All are to Him devoutly obedient. And it is He who begins creation; then He repeats it, and that is [even] easier for Him. To Him belongs the highest attribute in the heavens and earth. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. He presents to you an example from yourselves. Do you have among those whom your right hands possess any partners in what We have provided for you so that you are equal therein [and] would fear them as your fear of one another [within a partnership]? Thus do We detail the verses for a people who use reason. But those who wronged among them changed [the words] to a statement other than that which had been said to them. So We sent upon them a punishment from the sky for the wrong that they were doing." [Quran 30:24-28]
These verses and others in the Quran describe the concept of Barzakh as a state of waiting and accountability for the soul after death, where it remains until the Day of Resurrection.
"Until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "My Lord, send me back. That I might do righteousness in that which I left behind." No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a Barzakh until the Day they are resurrected." [Surah Al-Mu'minun, 23:99-100]
"And before them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected." [Surah Al-Mu'minun, 23:100]
"And We have placed before them a barrier and behind them a barrier and covered them, so they do not see." [Surah Yasin, 36:9]
"And warn them, [O Muhammad], of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be concluded; and [yet], they are in [a state of] heedlessness, and they do not believe." [Surah Maryam, 19:39]
"So when the Horn is blown, no relationship will there be among them that Day, nor will they ask about one another." [Surah Al-Mu'minun, 23:101]
"The disbelievers say, "This [Qur'an] is not except a falsehood he invented, and another people assisted him in it." But they have committed an injustice and a lie." [Surah Al-Furqan, 25:4]
"And those who disbelieve say, "This [Qur'an] is not except a lie invented by those before us, and it has been affirmed by them." But they are not certain." [Surah Al-Qasas, 28:48]
In summary, the Quran mentions Barzakh as a barrier or partition that separates life in this world from the afterlife, and it is a temporary state that souls experience after death and before the Day of Resurrection. The Quranic verses related to Barzakh emphasize that after death, there is no opportunity to do good deeds or repent, and that the Day of Resurrection is a certainty. The Quran also criticizes those who disbelieve in the message of the Quran and dismiss it as a falsehood or lie.
