He is said to have performed many miracles, such as bringing a dead boy back to life, and calling down fire from heaven to consume a sacrifice. He is also known for his confrontation with the prophets of the false god Baal, which is described in the Quran as a test of faith for the Israelites. Ilyas (Elias) according to Quran:
According to the Quran, Ilyas (Elijah) is mentioned as one of the prophets sent by God to guide the people of Israel. Here are a few references to Ilyas (Elias) in the Quran:
Quran 37:123-132 describes the story of the confrontation between Ilyas (Elias) and the prophets of the false god Baal. In this story, Ilyas (Elias) challenges the prophets of Baal to call on their god to send down fire to consume a sacrifice, while he calls on God to do the same. God responds to Ilyas' prayer and sends down fire to consume the sacrifice, while the prophets of Baal are unable to elicit a response from their god.
Quran 6:85: And Zakariya and John and Jesus and Elias; every one (of them) was of the righteous.
Quran 37:130: So the people were divided into three groups, one saying, "We have faith in Allah," the second saying, "We believe in the Prophet, but we have doubts," and a third group denying the truth. But Allah is not in need of them. He is in no way pleased with disbelief for His servants.
It's worth noting that these verses describe Ilyas (Elias) as one of the righteous and one of the prophet sent by Allah, but it does not specifically mention what he is most known for.
Ilyas (Elias) according to Hadith:
In Hadith, Ilyas (Elijah) is considered one of the five major Prophets in Islam, along with Adam, Noah, Abraham, and Moses. Hadith are the sayings, actions, and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions. Here are a few Hadith references to Ilyas (Elias) in Islam:
Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No: 3416: Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar: Allah's Apostle said, "The Prophet Elijah will be a messenger to the people of my community, and he will come to them before the Hour (Day of Judgment) and will judge among them with truth and justice."
Sahih Muslim, Hadith No: 641: Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Elijah will be a messenger to my people and he will come to them before the Day of judgment."
Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No: 3415: Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar: Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour (Day of Judgment) will not be established until the son of Mary (i.e. Jesus) descends amongst you as a just ruler, he will break the cross, kill the pigs, and abolish the Jizya tax. Money will be in abundance so that nobody will accept it (as charitable gifts).
These Hadiths highlight the belief that Elijah will be a messenger of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and play an important role before the Day of Judgment, judging people with truth and justice, Also these hadith mention that he will come before the Hour (Day of Judgment) which is an indication of his significance in the Islamic belief.
